Raqqa, Syria − The suburbs of the city of Raqqa saw last week fierce clashes between the al-Qaeda linked group of the Islamic State in Iraq and Sham (ISIS) and brigades of the opposition’s Free Syrian Army (FSA)−including al-Jihad and Abdul Aziz brigades.

The clashes took place near the Tel al-Samin area (30 km north of Raqqa city) after the FSA brigades refused to join the ranks of the ISIS group.

The difference between both groups (FSA and ISIS) is deemed to be ideological, as the ISIS adopts al-Qaeda agenda of establishing an Islamic State in the area and implementing Shariaa, which is considered by the FSA as a foreign agenda detached from the Syrian revolution’s objectives “of ousting the Assad regime and building a democratic Syria”.

Dozens of fighters from both groups were reportedly killed during the recent clashes in Raqqa’s suburbs.

Sources in Tel Samin told ARA News that some of the fighter’s bodies were moved to the Tel Samin mosque, and three of them were identified as Khaled Ibrahim Tayib, Jarbou Arafat, and Khaled Breij.

Fighters of the Islamic State in Iraq and Sham (ISIS) could reportedly control the villages of Tel Saminand al-Zahira in the northern suburbs of Raqqa city. Hundreds of Arab Bedouin residents (basically from Fadaan and Bureij clans) were detained by the ISIS members as the group stormed most of the houses in these villages.

In a linked context, informed sources in the west countryside of the city of Gire SipiTel Abyad and Kobanê suburbs told ARA News that members of the FSA-linked al-Jihad and Abdul Aziz brigades surrendered the Kurdish forces of the Popular Protection Units (YPG) and gave up their weapons.

This development followed the FSA brigades’ clashes with the ISIS fighters. Other FSA fighters were reportedly besieged by ISIS in several villages near Raqqa.
