Tel Abyad, Syria− The General Command of the Kurdish forces of the Popular Protection Units (YPG) issued a statement on Sunday saying that its forces have killed 30 fighters of the al-Qaeda affiliated Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) during clashes near the city of Sere Kaniye/Qas al-Ain, west of Qamishli.
Fierce clashes broke out on Saturday between the YPG forces and fighters of the ISIL group in the town of Manajeer, in Sere Kaniye’s suburb.
Activists said that the clashes followed an attack by the ISIL fighters against the town in a try to control YPG’s headquarters there.
The YPG General Command stated that they could seize a number of light and heavy weapons, and destroyed a tank which was used by ISIL fighters during the group’s attack against Manajeer town.
In the meantime, ISIL-linked media sources denied the information provided by the Kurdish General Command, saying that “more than 30 YPG members were killed during the clashes in Manajeer” when the ISIL fighters bombed a YPG-held checkpoint in the area. ARA News could not confirm the accurate number of casualties fell during Saturday’s clashes.
