Qamishli, Syria−The Kurdish forces of the Popular Protection Units (YPG) seized on Friday the city of Tel Birak, northeastern Syria, after three weeks of clashes with Islamist forces.

Dozens of fighters have been killed during the conflict between the YPG and fighters of the al-Qaeda affiliated group of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) to control Tel Birak. Other rebel battalions participated in Tel Birak battles, including Ahrar al-Sham Movement. However, the Kurdish YPG −military wing of the Democratic Union Party (PYD)− could take over the city on Friday evening.

The Media Center of the YPG forces issued a statement declaring the YPG’s full domination over Tel Birak and the surrounding villages.

According to the YPG Media Center, more than 50 ISIL fighters were killed during the clashes, and 42 others were taken hostages by the YPG. While three members of the YPG were killed during Friday’s operation.

“Our forces (YPG) have also confiscated three military vehicles, six heavy machine guns, and 12 Kalashnikovs next to a large amount of explosive materials,” the statement said.

The YPG statement reassured the Arab tribes living in Tel Birak city that the Kurdish forces will not target any civilians in the city, saying that its military operations were only aimed at “cleansing the area from terrorists who do not belong to the region”.

“We call on all tribes in the name of the Kurdish-Arab brotherhood to cooperate with our forces to confront those extremists for the sake of reviving the coexistence between the diverse social components in the area. We will never allow these mercenaries (al-Qaeda’s ISIL) to spread segregation among us. A social solidarity is needed at the moment,” the YPG statement concluded.
