Qamishli, Syria− As the Syrian presidential elections approach, supporters of President Bashar al-Assad took to the street in the city of Qamishli on Sunday, to emphasize their full support to Assad to be re-elected for a new term.
Dozens of Assad’s fans participated in the demonstration and raised pictures of the Syrian President and chanted slogans glorifying the ruling Baath Party.
The Syrian regime −which is in conflict with the opposition groups since more than three years− announced last month that Assad intends to run presidential elections.
According to observers, organizing pro-Assad demonstrations in this phase is meant to provide Assad with legitimacy to run the country for a new presidential term (7 years), despite the three-year-old rebellion against his regime.
Fares Salman, an opposition activist based in Qamishli, told ARA News that the pro-regime marches phenomenon in Qamishil city “is a result of the monopoly of power by the Democratic Union Party (PYD) which deprived other Kurdish factions the right to demonstrate against the regime, while its forces (Assayish and YPG) remain silent regarding any pro-Assad demonstrations in the area”.
“There is an apparent coordination between the PYD and the Syrian regime,” Salman argued. “Otherwise, the Kurdish city of Qamishlo (Qamishli) would never see a minority of Shabeeha (in reference to pro-Assad militants) organizing demonstrations and raising pro-Baath (Party) slogans, while the majority of the city’s inhabitants are banned to take to the street and condemn the massacres committed by this regime against the Syrians.”
Salman added that the PYD-led self-rule in some Syrian northern areas is responsible for the arrest of dozens of civilians and activists.
Abdel Nasser Faris, activist and member of the Revolution Youth Movement, told ARA News that the regime is trying to justify “its losses in the Syrian coast (Latakia and its countryside) through intensifying operations against Aleppo and organizing some marches to show that Assad is still a legitimate and powerful president”.
“The PYD has announced a transitional government in the Kurdish areas (north and northeast of Syria) to show that it is in power; however, everything is still in the hand of the regime, and the PYD has unfortunately turned into a regime-led tool,” Faris said. “The PYD attacks the opposition and remains silence towards the regime’s practices.”
Supporters of President Bahsar al-Assad have earlier organized several demonstrations in the predominantly Kurdish city of Qamishli to show loyalty to the Assad regime.
