Islamic State defeated in Damascus

Damascus, Syria – The Army of Islam (rebel faction in Syria), led by Zahran Aloush, seized control of the town of Midaa in in Damascus countryside on Wednesday, after clashes with the militants of al-Qaeda offshoot group of the Islamic State (which previously used to call itself ‘the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant ISIL’).

Mazen Ibrahim, civil rights activist based in Damascus, told ARA News that violent clashes broke out between the two parties (the Army of Islam and ISIL group) in the town. “At least ten fighters from the Army of Islam have been killed, while dozens were reported dead in the ranks of the Islamic State.”

Ibrahim emphasized that the ISIL militants withdrew from the town “after they were sure of their inability to cope with the Army of Islam fighters” towards Adra Industrial City and al-Dumair area in Damascus suburbs.

“ISIL fighters withdraw through the regime-held areas,” he said.

In another context, the pro-regime forces bombed the town of Maliha in Eastern Ghouta of Damascus with heavy artillery and mortar fire, from their headquarters in the barracks of Kamal Mashariqah, coinciding with the clashes between fighters from the Rahman Islamic Brigade and the Islamic Union of Ajnad al-Sham on the one hand, and the regime forces backed by the Shiite Lebanese militia of Hezbollah on the other hand, on the outskirts of the town.

In the meantime, the pro-Assad forces used heavy artillery to bombard the city of Zabadani in Damascus Suburbs in the Western Ghouta launched from the regime-led Camp Barrier (al-Muaskar Checkpoint).

Zabadani’s developments coincided with an attack by the pro-Assad air force with explosive barrels on the city (Zabadani), without reports of casualties.
