Qamishli, Syria – In an attempt to spread control over the entire northeastern region in Syria, militants of the Islamic State (IS) have recently intensified operations against the city of Hasakah, which is controlled by several armed forces, including pro-Assad military forces, Kurdish forces of the Popular Protection Units (YPG), Kurdish Assayish security forces and pro-Assad militants of the National Defence Army (Arab tribal militia). Controlling Hasakah city will open the door in front of the Islamic State to broaden its “Caliphate” rule over Syria’s northeast entirely.

Several mortar shells hit different districts of the city of Hasakah in northeastern Syria on Tuesday night. The shells were reportedly launched from the southern countryside of the city, where militants of the Islamic State (IS) are stationed.

Dilovan Mohammed, civil rights activist based in Hasakah city, stated to ARA News that three mortar shells dropped on Tuesday evening on the Aziziya neighbourhood east of the city, wounding a number of civilians and causing material damage.

“Meanwhile, a shell landed near the governorate building in the city center. At least one civilian was injured,” Mohammed said.

Another mortar shell landed on one of the checkpoints of the Kurdish forces of the Popular Protection Units (YPG) in al-Ghazl district, causing an explosion in one of the tanks of diesel fuel, without recording casualties. The attacked district saw a wave of displacement among residents after the incident.

The city of Hasakah saw a security alert among the YPG and the Assayish forces (military and security arms of the Democratic Union Party “PYD”), especially in the Kurdish-populated neighbourhoods.

Local sources reported that the Kurdish forces are organizing their ranks to be prepared for possible attacks by al-Qaeda offshoot group of the Islamic State (IS) –previously known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant “ISIL”.

Speaking to ARA News, civil activist Ismail Heme said that clashes erupted between the YPG fighters and Arab gunmen from the neighbourhood of Geweran after the latter installed barriers near the Beiruti bridge in Hasakah city, which led to the deployment of dozens military forces of the YPG and the spread of snipers on the roofs of buildings in front of the Beiruti bridge.

On the other hand, four members of the pro-Assad military forces were reported dead on Wednesday during clashes with IS militants in southern Hasakah.

This city of Hasakah is experiencing a state of security tension since last week, after an attempt by the Islamic State group to control the city, where violent clashes broke out on the outskirts of the city between the IS group on the one hand, and the pro-regime military forces and YPG on the other hand.
