Hasakah, Syria – The pro-regime helicopters bombed on Thursday morning al-Melabiya area and its surroundings south of the city of Hasakah, northeast of Syria, coinciding with artillery shelling from the regime-held regiment of Kawkab Mount. The Syrian air force targeted in its attacks the strongholds of the Islamic State group in the area.

Local activists said that the military operations came in response to Wednesday’s attack by al-Qaeda splinter group of the Islamic State (previously known as ‘ISIL’) on the regime-held artillery battalion in southern Hasakah.

Hasakah city saw a state of alert among the pro-Assad regular security forces and the militia of National Defence Army since Thursday’s early morning, with the closure of the entrances to the city center, beside the blockade of Qamishli-Hasakah road.

Meanwhile, examinations supposed to be held this week at al-Furat University in Hasakah were postponed due to the deteriorating security situation in the city and its surroundings, local sources told ARA News.

The pro-Assad forces in Hasakah launched earlier this week military operations against ISIL group in an attempt to regain control of several rural areas south and west of the city.
