Qamishli, Syria – Murat Karayilan, military commander of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), said on Friday that the joint head of the PKK-linked Kurdistan Society Organization, Jamil Bayik, must apologize to the Kurdish Peshmerga forces, after Bayik belittled them in an earlier statement.

Karayilan emphasized in an official statement that Bayik should apologize to the Peshmerga forces and the people of Iraqi Kurdistan “for his irresponsible statements”.

Karayilan’s latest remarks came after the joint head of Kurdistan Society Organization Jamil Bayik stated in an interview with the German Allegemeine newspaper that the Kurdish Peshmerga forces “escaped the Yezidi area of Shingal before militants of the Islamic State (IS) entered the area”.

“The Peshmerga forces handed over their weapons to IS and fled Shingal area following IS control of Nineveh province in northern Iraq.  Bayik accused the Peshmerga of reluctance to defend the Yezidi minority in Shingal against IS militants. “Fighters of the President of Iraqi Kurdistan, Massoud Barzani, escaped from IS, leaving unarmed civilians to face a horrible destiny on their own, hoping they may gain sympathy from the international community to provide them with sophisticated weapons,” Bayik argued.

“We (PKK) saved tens of thousands of Yezidis who fled the terrorism of the Islamic State,” Baiyk stated last week. Bayik has also called on the western countries to arm the PKK “instead of the Peshmerga forces”. “The international community should reconsider the urgent need to support the PKK troops because they are the most serious party to fight against this terrorist organization,” Bayik told the German newspaper.

On the other hand, Halkord Hikmet, the Media Director for the Ministry of Peshmerga, said in a press statement that Karayilan’s call on Bayik to apologize to the Peshmerga forces indicates that there are “different opinions within the PKK”.
