Istanbul, Turkey – The American Congress approved arming the “moderate” Syrian opposition on Friday.
The bill, which passed with 78 votes against 22 in the Senate, allows the American President Barack Obama to sign it into law.
Obama praised the approval of both the Democratic and Republican Parties on the training and arming plan of the “moderate” opposition in Syria; as it showed the world the unity of the American People against extremists of the Islamic State (IS/ISIS).
However, the Congress-approved bill does not give the government complete authorities to train and arm nor allows training on the American land; Saudi Arabia will host the training camps, according to reports.
Based on the bill, the American government is obliged to present periodical reports each 90 days on the progress of the training, the number of fighters trained, the beneficiaries, and ways of using the provided weapons.
The bill states no extra funding for the operations and determines 11 December 2014 as an authorization deadline, when the Obama Administration is expected to refer back to the Congress and explain its strategy against IS.
