Erbil, Kurdistan Region – Militants of the Islamic State (IS/ISIS), an al-Qaeda offshoot, took control of 11 villages south of the town of Tel Kocher (Yarubia) northeast of al-Hasakah province, adjacent to the Iraqi border, over the past three days.

IS advancement comes despite air strikes by the U.S.-led international coalition against the group’s strongholds in the region, while fighting is still going on in the vicinity of the village of Jazaa at the Syrian-Iraqi border between IS fighters and Kurdish forces of the Popular Protection Units (YPG).

Meanwhile, on Tuesday afternoon the villages of Safana and Hwaira were seized by IS on Tuesday afternoon.

Mansour Saleh, one of Jazaa residents, told ARA News that intensified confrontations took place between the YPG and IS militants after the international coalition strikes hit one of the joint checkpoints between the YPG and al-Karama Army (Jaish al-Karama) (linked to Sheikh Hamidi Jarba, an Arab tribal leader in al-Hasakah), causing the death of 67 members from both parties, including a commander of al-Hamidi armed group at al-Hweira checkpoint.

“The U.S.-led coalition bombed other villages in Janoub al-Rad area, which is controlled by the IS group,” Saleh added.

However, a military source from the Kurdish YPG forces, speaking to ARA News, denied the accuracy of this information concerning the targeting of YPG-led checkpoints or any Kurdish forces’ gathered in the area.

On the other hand, local sources reported that dozens of IS militant fighters were killed during clashes with the join forces of the YPG and al-Karama Army near the Iraqi border on Tuesday evening.
