Daraa, Syria – Militants of al-Omari Battalion, an Islamist group fighting against the Syrian regime in Daraa province, executed a media activist on Monday, local sources reported.
Qaysar al-Habib, 29, was known for his media activism as a blogger and reporter to several local outlets. He covered violations of the Assad regime’s military forces in Daraa, as well as violations of the rebel forces in the province.
Al-Habib was recently injured and transferred to a field hospital in Daraa. He was reportedly executed by the Islamist rebels of al-Omari Battalion in the hospital, according to eyewitnesses.
Islamist rebels said that al-Habib was accused of opening fire against the leader of al-Omari Battalion, Qais al-Qataina, who was reported dead nearly two months ago in the southwestern countryside of Daraa.
Following the execution of the media activist, members of al-Omari Battalion issued a statement on Monday, saying that there was no other way to let justice take place but by summarily executing al-Habib.
However, Syrian activists reported that the group wanted to get rid of al-Habib “who was uncovering their violations in Daraa province”.
