Urfa, Turkey – Ahmed Hisso, spokesman of al-Akrad Front (a Syrian rebel group), said that members of the recently estabished operation’s chamber of Burkan al-Furat have captured dozens of militants of the Islamic State (IS/ISIL) in Kobane, northern Syria.
Burkan al-Furat was founded by joint efforts of factions of the Syrian rebel forces (FSA) and fighters of the Kurdish Popular Protection Units (YPG) in order to defend Kobane against IS extremists.
“At least 40 IS fighters were captured by our forces in Burkan al-Furat in the city of Kobane on Saturday,” Hisso told ARA News in an exclusive interview. “We were able to overwhelm dozens of IS militants near the military square in Kobane, where 24 IS militants were killed and 40 were captured.”
“Following many attempts, the IS militants failed to reach the border crossing with Turkey and to use car bombs. It withdrew from the southern and eastern fronts (of Kobane) following the al-Furat’s attacks on its strongholds,” Hisso said.
Hisso mentioned that 35-trained fighters of al-Akrad Front arrived in Kobane on Saturday to participate in Kobane’s street fighting.
According to Hisso, the Kurdish forces and the rebel battalion of Burkan al-Furat is determent to defeat the IS militants in Kobane”.
“We will do whatever it takes to protect Kobane against the IS threats.”
Regarding the U.S.-led international coalition’s airstrikes against the headquarters of the Islamic State extremists, particularly in Kobane, Hisso believes that the coalition should intensify its strikes “to accelerate the process of exhausting IS in Kobane”.
“The efforts of the U.S.-led coalition are still limited and cannot guarantee full withdrawal of IS from Kobane,” Hisso told ARA News.
Meanwhile, sources in Kobane reported that the YPG forces received some military support on Saturday, yet the source and type of support remains confidential.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights stated on Saturday that twenty-three IS members were killed in Kobane while trying to break into the city center.
The observatory also mentioned the death of 16 sixteen IS members when a small lorry and a coach full of weapons tried to progress on Minas road, southwest of Kobane, where the Kurdish forces targeted them.
“Seven other IS fighters were killed when their vehicle was bombarded by YPG forces,” The observatory reported.
