Erbil, Iraqi Kurdistan – The Egyptian extremist group of Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis announced allegiance to the Islamic State (IS/ISIL) and its Caliph Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.
The group released a statement on Monday evening, swearing allegiance to the IS and loyalty to al-Baghdadi.
The Egyptian radical group has earlier sought inspiration and advice from Islamic State’s leaders, according to Reuters.
“After entrusting God we decided to swear allegiance to the emir of the faithful Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, Caliph of the Muslims in Syria and Iraq and in other countries,” the statement said.
Militants of Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis has killed hundreds of Egyptian policemen and army forces in the last few months.
The group is mainly active in North Sinai, where its members launched several attacks last week, killing at least 32 Egyptian security members.
Following the incident, the Egyptian government announced a state of emergency in the area.
