Qamishli, Syria – On Friday, the President of Iraqi Kurdistan, Massoud Barzani, congratulated the Yezidi Kurds in the region on the occasion of their fasting festival, saying that the victory of the Pehsmerga forces against IS militants “is the most appropriate present to the Yezidi Kurds who have suffered the most from the atrocities of the IS militants”.

“We assure the people of Kurdistan that the Peshmerga will soon eliminate this terrorist group,” he said.

On Friday, the Kurdish forces of Peshmerga took control of Sinune area after fierce clashes with IS militants. This comes one day after the Peshmergas made their way to Mount Sinjar and lifted the siege on hundreds of stranded Yezidis.

On the occasion of the Yezidis’ Fasting Day, Barzani added in his message: “I am pleased to dedicate to our Yezidi brothers and sisters the impressive victories achieved by the Kurdish Peshmerga heroes in the battlefields.”

The arrival of the Kurdish Peshmerga in Mount Sinjar and liberation Shingal  in December 18, 2014, also coincided with Kurdistan’s Flag Day,” Barzani said.

“Our enemies should know they will pay a high price for their hostility and brutal atrocities against the Kurds.”

Speaking to ARA News, the Kurdish writer and politician Tawfik Abdulmajid said that the Peshmerga forces are expected to accomplish more gains against the IS group in the coming days.

“The international support to the Peshmerga forces indicates that Kurds are fighting for the sake of humanity against those terrorists, and we have begun to see the fruits of these efforts represented in the recent gains by the Kurdish forces,” he said.

The Islamic State group (IS/ISIS) seized the provinces of Nineveh and Salahuddin in northern Iraq and the predominantly Yezidi areas about five months ago.
