Istanbul, Turkey – The prominent Jordanian Salafist cleric, Omar Mahmoud (known as Abu Qatada), described the leader of the Islamic State group (IS/ISIS), Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, as a “stray liar”, naming his fighters as “dogs of hell”.
Abu Qatada’s remarks came on Sunday, after describing al-Nusra Front’s fight in Ghouta against the “brutal Syrian regime” as “true Jihad”.
Al-Nusra Front is known as the Syrian branch of al-Qaeda.
Abu Qatada advised –in a statement published online– al-Nusra’s fighters to treat their Muslim brothers with mercy, warning of the consequences of leaving the battlefields in Syria.
“Those who fled from battles, and left Jihad (the peak of Islam) to return to the mortal and fatal life, humiliation will be seen in their faces,” the Salafist cleric said.
Abu Qatada, who faced charges of terrorism in Jordan, described IS militants as “the extremists of the strayed al-Baghdadi”.
“Those militants have been seduced by al-Baghdadi due to their ignorance.”
“They have degraded Islam with their ignorance and extremism,” Abu Qatada added.
Addressing young Muslim men, Abu Qatada said: “Preserve your pure jihad’s name from al-Baghdadi’s dogs (followers).”
