Damascus, Syria – The Syrian regime denied reports of building a secret underground plant for developing nuclear weapons.
The Syrian state news agency SANA quoted regime officials undermining reports about Damascus’ intention to develop nuclear weapons.
“Syria denies these allegations,” the regime-linked agency SANA said on Monday.
Last week, the German newspaper Der Spiegel published a report saying that the regime of President Bashar al-Assad is developing nuclear weapons in a secret underground plant.
“These are lies and ridiculous allegations,” SANA quoted regime officials as saying.
According to Der Spiegel, some unidentified intelligence sources said the plant was in an inaccessible mountain region near the town of Qusayr, in central Syria.
“The Lebanese Shiite militia Hezbollah, which supports Assad’s regime in the bloody conflict in Syria, is guarding the secret project,” Der Spiegel reported.
