Damascus, Syria – The Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem said that Syria does not need any ground support from the U.S.-led international coalition forces to fight against Islamic State group (IS/ISIS), stressing that the Syrian Arab Army is implementing this mission on the ground.

Al-Moallem emphasized during a press conference on Monday –with his Belarusian counterpart Vladimir MacKay in the capital Damascus– that “Syria does not allow any party to breach its national sovereignty.”

The Syrian FM also sent a letter to the Jordanian government, centered on the latter’s response to the Syrian call for cooperation in the fight against terrorism, following the IS execution of pilot Moaz Kassasbeh.

“Syria condemned what happened to the pilot Kassasbeh, and considered the IS action as a terrorist crime,” al-Moallem said, pointing out that Syria had invited Jordan to cooperate in the field of anti-terrorism despite their knowledge of Jordan’s inability to make such decisions.

Al-Moallem accused Jordan as being part the U.S. plan to train opposition fighters, describing those to be trained as “terrorists”.

“Instead of cooperating with the U.S. to train those terrorists, why didn’t Jordan fight terrorists of the al-Nusra Front on its northern border?”

In the meantime, the Syrian minister expressed gratitude to Russia for hosting the last consultative meeting in Moscow, which brought together figures from the Syrian opposition with representatives of the regime.

“We thank the Russian friends on what they’ve done to thwart the Western plans targeting Syria, and we as the Syrian government are determined to follow-up the Russian efforts to reach a Syrian-Syrian dialogue and solution in Damascus.”

Commenting on the initiative by the U.N. envoy to Syria, Steffan de Mistura, al-Moallem said that the first step of the initiative is centered with the freezing of fighting in the city of Aleppo, “and this is what we are seeking through the Syrian Arab Army’s efforts to unify the city of Aleppo and regain normal life to it”.

The Syrian Foreign Ministry invited Jordan for cooperation in the field of anti-terrorism last week, after the Islamic State’s execution of the Jordanian pilot Moaz Kassasbeh.
