Urfa, Turkey – Russian President Vladimir Putin said during an official visit to Egypt Tuesday that he expects another round of Syrian peace talks to be held soon. This comes after meetings between opposition figures and representatives of the Syrian government in Moscow last month.

“We look forward to another round of talks, which I hope will lead to a peaceful settlement of the situation in Syria,” Putin said.

Commenting on Putin’s visit to Egypt, political activist Mohamed Sobhi told ARA News: “Any solution will need coordination with regional and international powers, including Russia.”

“All parties are depending on Russia’s role and respect its impact on the Syrian regime,” he said, pointing out that the Russian pressure on the regime is strategic in light of its vital interests in the Middle East.

“Russia should end the Syrian crisis to secure its interests in the Middle East,” he argued.

Regarding the situation in Egypt, Subhi also said that there is a change in the discourse of Gulf countries towards the ruling regime in Egypt, which is an additional lure for Russia to invest in the gaps that could affect Egypt’s relationship with the Gulf Cooperation Council and its partnerships in the Middle East.

“Thus, this could open the door for Russia to follow Egyptian armament Affairs and some economic and diplomatic interests,” Subhi told ARA News.

Noteworthy, Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Cairo on Monday for a two-day official visit at the invitation of the Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, according to a statement issued by the Egyptian Presidential Office.
