Qamishli, Syria – At least 11 Kurdish fighters from the People’s Protection Units (YPG) have been killed during battles against Islamic State group (IS/ISIS) since Thursday in the Hasakah countryside, a military source reported on Friday.

According the source, the Kurdish fighters were killed in the area located between the towns of Tel Brak and al-Hol in Hasakah province near the Syrian-Iraqi border.

Speaking to ARA News, a fighter in the YPG’s ranks said (under the condition of anonymity) that the Kurdish YPG fighters with the support of the Sanadid Forces (fighters belonging to the Arab clan of Shammar) attacked IS locations in the southeastern countryside of the town of Tel Brak, near the village of Umm Hajira and Khatouniya on the road to the IS-held town of al-Hol.

“The attack resulted in the death of a number of Islamists, including a leading militant,” the source added.

The source stressed that “during the military operations against IS radicals in the town of Tel Brak, a number of our fighters lost their lives.”

Meanwhile, civil rights activist Salam Saleh told ARA News in Qamishli that ten YPG fighters were killed during the clashes, which lasted from Thursday to Friday morning, eight of whom were from the Antaria and Qanat Swais neighborhoods in the city of Qamishli.

“Three others were from the al-Hilaliya neighborhood, one of whom was identified as Raman Navmali,” the source added.

Noteworthy, the YPG forces took control of the towns of Tel Hamis and Tal Brak two weeks ago, after fierce battles with IS extremists forced them to withdraw towards the town of al-Hol –one of the group’s strongholds in the eastern areas of Hasakah province.
