Kobane, Syria – The recently founded local office of Kobane city in northern Syria said on Thursday that a group of Danish experts are currently working on the dismantling of mines left by the extremists of the Islamic State (IS/ISIS) in the city before their withdrawal.
The city of Kobane was liberated by the Kurdish forces and allied U.S.-led coalition three months ago. However, the group has left behind dozens of land mines and explosive materials across the city, which prevent hundreds of displaced facilities from returning home.
Members of Kobane’s local office –established by the Kurdish Auto-Administration– told ARA News that dozens of mines left by IS terrorists have been destroyed by the Danish experts last week. “However, many other await to be dismantled in order to guarantee the safety of the returning civilians.”
Some 50 civilians were recently killed by IS-leftover mines and improvised explosive devices in Kobane.
In the meantime, authorities of the recently declared Auto-Administration in Syria’s Kurdish areas, including Kobane, are reportedly working on the formation of an administrative council to hold negotiations with Turkey in order to facilitate the access of Kobane’s residents across the Syrian-Turkish borderline.
The establishment of the administrative council is also aimed at assisting the parties concerned with Kobane’s reconstruction and rehabilitation.
Turkey’s Kurds have reportedly provided vehicles to help Kobane’s civilians move the ruins of destroyed buildings and remnants of war from the streets of their hometown.
“At the moment, we study the possibility of opening a highway connecting Jarabulus (in Aleppo province) with Tel Abyad, (in Raqqa province) in order to facilitate the movement of civilians and the organizations who intend to participate in rebuilding our city. However, we try first to cope with the lack of needed devices and equipments to achieve this project,” a member of Kobane’s local office told ARA News. “Life should return to Kobane, thus IS terrorists know that their barbarism cannot take over in our areas.”
