Kurds attack ISIS near Turkish border

Urfa, Turkey – The anti-IS joint forces (YPG and Burkan al-Furat) seized control of two news villages in the western countryside of Tel Abyad (Gire Spi) in Raqqa province, northeastern Syria, after fierce clashes with the Islamic State group (IS/ISIS), military soured reported on Friday. 

Speaking to ARA News, Sarhad Abbas, fighter in the YPG’s ranks reported that the joint forces seized control of the villages Bir Arab and Badir Khan, west of Tel Abyad city.

“At least eight IS terrorists were killed during the clashes, which the rest have forcibly withdrawn from those villages,” Assad said. 

Tel Abyad is considered one of the main IS headquarters near the Turkish border. The Kurdish fighters of the YPG, supported by Burkan al-Furat rebels, aim to regain Tel Abyad city, which has been taken by Islamists in summer of 2013. 

“Friday’s gains brought our forces nearer to the IS-held city of Tel Abyad. We will do everything needed to expel the terrorists from this strategic city,” the source told ARA News.  

Abbas added that clashes are ongoing between the joint forces and IS extremists in the eastern front of Kobane, especially in the villages of Qurunful Foqani, Sarzuri and al-Jirin al-Aswad. “While the nearby town of Sirrin in southern Kobane is relatively calm, with the exception of some sporadic clashes in the vicinity of the town.”

The joint forces reported advancement in the countryside of Tel Abyad, in an attempt to open the road between the cities of Kobane and Hasakah, according to Kurdish military sources.
