Kobane, Syria – On Sunday, a group of Islamic State’s militants (IS/ISIS) infiltrated into a town west of Kobane in northern Syria, military sources reported.

Fierce clashes broke out between the radical group and Kurdish fighters of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) west of Kobane on Sunday, coinciding with airstrikes by the U.S.-led coalition against IS fighting positions in the area.

Speaking to ARA News in Kobane, Kurdish fighters Abu Ali Osman said that a group of IS militants infiltrated into the Shuyoukh Foqani town, which led to clashes between the militants and the Kurdish forces.

“Some of the (IS) terrorists entered the area through the Turkish border near Jibna village, while others arrived from Raqqa to back their fellow militants in the fight against Kurdish forces in Kobane,” he said.

The source pointed out that the U.S.-led coalition’s raids hit several positions of IS, adding that the clashes continued until Sunday midnight.

At least ten IS militants were killed during the clashes on Sunday.

On Saturday, Kurdish forces of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) regained control of the city of Kobane in northern Syria, after two days of battles against militants of the Islamic State group (IS/ISIS).

Local sources told ARA News that about a hundred IS militants were able to infiltrate the city of Kobane at dawn of Thursday. IS militants slaughtered more than 220 Kurdish civilians in the city.

The Documentation Center in Kobane reported the death of 227 Kurdish civilians at the hand of the hardline group in the past few days, adding that 253 others were injured during shelling and suicide attacks by the radical group.

“Most of the victims were women and children,” a member of the Documentation Center told ARA News in Kobane.
