Qamishli, Syria – The Assyrian Network for Human Rights said that al-Nusra Front (al-Qaeda branch in Syria) has abducted the priest of the Yaqoubiya village and Franciscan monk Father Zia Aziz in Idlib province, northern Syria.
Nusra militants abducted the priest from his place of residence in Deir al-Habal in the Christian village of Yaqoubiya in Jisr ash-Shughur area of Idlib province.
The jihadists abducted Father Zia last Saturday, the source reported.
“The kidnapping of priest Zia Aziz is a criminal act that aims to hit the Christian existence in the area,” the Network said.
Islamists have earlier abducted Syrian bishops John Abraham, Paul Yaziji and Jacob Murad. Their fate remains unknown.
“The continuation of such violations against Christian religious symbols in Syria may lead to a sectarian strife between Christians and Muslims. The perpetrators must consider the serious consequences of such criminal acts,” Assyrian Network for Human Rights said in a statement.
