Qamishli, Syria – Egyptian authorities said Monday that security forces stormed positions of terrorist organizations, and killed 88 militants in separate parts of the country.

“Special forces of north Sinai caused heavy losses in the ranks of the terrorist groups, after storming their strongholds in Sheikh Zuwaid, al-Arish and Rafah,” military spokesman in the Egyptian army Mohammed Samir said in a statement.

“Our forces killed 88 terrorists and captured 56 others in the districts of at-Touma, al-Qawadis, az-Zahriyat, al-Muqataa, al-Lafitat, az-Zawaria and Balaa,” Samir said.

“The army destroyed 48 vehicles and motorcycles as well as nine headquarters belonging to the terrorist groups,” leadership of the Egyptian army said, pointing out that they discovered 47 explosive devices “that were prepared for use in terrorist attacks against Egyptian security centers.”

Speaking to ARA News in Cairo, journalist Angie Ali said: “The terrorists are trying to fortify their positions in the Sinai Peninsula, which was declared as a capital for the Islamic State group (IS/ISIS) in Egypt.”

This comes after the radical group of Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis swore allegiance to the caliph of ISIS, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.
