ALEPPO – Clashes renewed on Monday between Kurdish forces of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) and militants of al-Nusra Front (Syria’s wing of al-Qaeda) in the northern Syrian city of Aleppo, activists reported.
At least nine Nusra militants were killed and four others wounded during the clashes, which took place near the Jandoul roundabout in Shuqef neighborhood in Aleppo.
“The Kurdish forces have also bombed two Nusra vehicles in Monday’s clashes,” media activist Serut Hemo told ARA News in Aleppo.
Last week, the Kurdish YPG forces regained the Sheikh Maksud district in northeastern Aleppo after fierce battles against al-Nusra Front and other Islamist rebels.
“The YPG currently tries to protect the Kurdish-majority neighborhoods in Aleppo after Nusra militants killed dozens of civilians with mortar attacks,” a YPG official told ARA News on the phone.
“We are currently combatting Nusra in eastern Aleppo. Our forces try to secure civilians who have suffered enough from war.”
Also on Monday, the YPG fighters seized the Ham road, which used to be a supply line for Nusra and allied Islamist factions in Aleppo.
