Vienna meeting to test Iranian, Russian intentions regarding political solution in Syria: Saudi FM

ISTANBUL – Saudi Arabia will participate Friday in Syria’s peace talks in Vienna to “test” the willingness of pro-Assad countries of Russia and Iran, for a political solution to the deadly conflict, Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir said on Wednesday. 

“Our partners suggested that we should test intentions of the Iranians and the Russians in terms of reaching political solution in Syria, which we all prefer,” al-Jubeir told reporters in the Saudi capital Riyadh.

A number of countries that support Syrian rebels will meet in Vienna on Friday in a bid to reach a political solution for Syria’s ongoing war.

Saudi Foreign Minister said that there will be a meeting on Friday, during which western and regional countries supporting the Syrian opposition will meet to discuss the intentions of pro-Assad countries in finding a decisive solution to the Syrian crisis, including the departure of Bashar al-Assad.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and three of his deputies will attend the multilateral talks, Iranian media outlets reported. 

This is the first time that Tehran attends an international meeting on the Syrian crisis.

“Saudi Arabia and its allies would hold a separate meeting on Friday to discuss the time and means of ousting Bashar al-Assad,” the Saudi foreign minister added. 

Earlier this week, Russian Ambassador to the EU Vladimir Chizov said that Russia’s military intervention to back Syrian President Bashar al-Assad may have prevented the radical group of Islamic State’s (ISIS) total control of the country.
