ERBIL – The German government demanded Iraqi Kurdistan on Friday to ensure that weapons and other military supplies provided earlier by Berlin to be only used by the Kurdish Peshmerga forces in the fight against the radical group of Islamic State (ISIS).

Germany supplied weapons, including various types of pistols and G3 assault rifles, to the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to be used by the Peshmerga army in the fight against ISIS.

The WDR public broadcaster reported that some of the German weapons were offered for sale in markets in northern Iraq.

According to the German media, some former Peshmerga fighters might have sold their weapons that have been provided by Berlin.

“We have asked the representative of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) in Germany to come to the foreign ministry,” spokesman Martin Schaefer told reporters. “We expect the Kurdistan government and Peshmerga officials to work with speed and determination to address these accusations.”

Schaefer added that if such practices are confirmed “they must be stopped immediately and completely”.

However, a spokesman for the Peshmerga told ARA News in Erbil that the reports were baseless.

“Our (Peshmerga) forces have shown a complete commitment to the war on ISIS terrorists. This commitment is confirmed in the remarkable progress we have made over the past two years in northern Iraq. The weaponry use is under a high level of supervision, and a rifle is the honor of each of our soldiers and it could never be sold as it has been claimed,” the spokesman said.

Germany decided in August 2014 to arm the Peshmerga in their war on ISIS militants. Since then, Berlin has supplied Iraqi Kurdistan with several shipments of weapons.
